COMPATIBILITY BETWEEN POSTSCRIPT AND TRUETYPE DOCUMENTS
A document using fonts in the PostScript Type 1 format will not have the same line endings and page breaks as the same document using the same fonts in the TrueType format. This is due to differences in the font formats: it is not a problem with the Bitstream fonts.
Use the same font format consistently. If you plan to send a document to a service bureau for output to a high-resolution typesetter, make sure that the service bureau uses the same font format you used in your document.
To avoid problems with different line endings and page breaks, install fonts in either the PostScript Type 1 format or the TrueType format, not both.
APPLE LASERWRITER IIf AND IIg PRINTERS
• Printing problems on LaserWriter IIf and IIg printers
When printing documents containing full pages of text and/or a variety of fonts to LaserWriter IIf or IIg printers, an error message often appears, stating that a PostScript error occurred. This happens because the LaserWriter IIf and IIg printers do not have enough RAM to handle complex documents: it is not a problem with the Bitstream fonts.
Apple recommends a RAM upgrade for your printer to solve this problem.
Workarounds: Restart the printer and try printing the document again. If the problem still occurs, check the Page Setup dialog box in your application’s File menu. If it has an Options button, select Options, and select Unlimited Downloadable Fonts. Try printing the document again.
• Downloading fonts to LaserWriter IIf and IIg printers
If you plan to download fonts to a LaserWriter IIf or IIg printer with the LaserWriter Font Utility, DO NOT use any of the versions of LaserWriter Font Utility on the Utilities disk. Instead, use the LaserWriter Utility included on one of the disks that came with your printer.
“MISSING” CHARACTERS IN POSTSCRIPT OUTPUT
The Standard Character Set Key Cap Chart in the user guide shows 188 characters that are accessible on the Macintosh screen and in documents printed to PostScript printers.
In documents printed to PostScript printers, these 15 characters don’t match the design of the Bitstream font you used:

Your application accesses these characters from the Adobe Symbol font resident in the printer, instead of the Bitstream font you used. A mismatch between the Macintosh® character set and the PostScript character set causes this to happen. It is not a problem with the Bitstream fonts.
Note: These characters do not print at all if you are using Adobe Illustrator.™
APPLICATION NOTES FOR POSTSCRIPT TYPE 1
• Adobe Type Manager™: Character Clipping
To avoid character clipping in certain applications, select ATM’s Preserve Character Shapes option. To do this, select Control Panel from the Apple menu. Select ATM, select Character Shapes, and click OK. Select Restart from the Special menu to restart the Macintosh. • Adobe Type Manager: Non-PostScript Printers
You can print PostScript fonts on non-PostScript printers, such as the ImageWriter,® if you use ATM. However, kerning support in non-PostScript printers is inconsistent among applications. See your application user guide for more information.
• Aldus PageMaker®: Underline and Strikethru Characters
When using the Apple printer driver with PageMaker 4.0, if you highlight a section of text and select Underline (Command-Shift-U) or Strikethru (Command-Shift-/), the length of the underline or strikethru may not match the length of the text. Try using the Aldus printer driver. (PageMaker automatically selects the Aldus driver for you when you choose “Print...” from the File menu.)
• Aldus PageMaker: Wrong Fonts Print
When using the Aldus printer driver in PageMaker 4.0, these six characters print from the Adobe Symbol font resident in the PostScript printer, instead of the Bitstream font you selected:
These six characters are additions to the 15 mentioned above in “‘Missing’ Characters in PostScript Output.” Try using the Apple printer driver. To use the Apple driver, hold down the Option key as you choose “Print...” from the File menu.
• Aldus PageMaker: Printing in System 7 with the Aldus Driver
If you are using PageMaker 4.0 or 4.01 in System 7 with the Aldus printer driver, and you installed Bitstream fonts by dragging them onto the System Folder, your documents may print in Courier, instead of the fonts you selected. This happens because the Aldus driver can’t find the PostScript printer fonts. Call Aldus to get an update to PageMaker which fixes this problem.
• Microsoft® Word™: Underline and Strikethru Characters
If you highlight a section of text and select Underline (Command-Shift-U) or Strikethru (Command-Shift-/), the length of the underline or strikethru may not match the length of the text.
NOTE: This problem does not occur in System 7.
• QuarkXPress®: Kerning
To correctly use the Kerning Table Edit feature with Bitstream fonts, always use the same method for selecting the font you want to kern.
For example, if you want to kern a character or pair of characters in Bitstream Charter® Italic, always select Charter It BT in the Font menu, or Charter BT in the Font menu and Italic in the Type Style menu.
Then select Kerning Table Edit from the Utilities menu, and select Charter It BT <<Plain>> or Charter BT <<Italic>> to match the original font selection.
If your font selection method is inconsistent, the font may not always show the kerning you specify.
Or, you can use a kerning utility such as MacKern,™ which makes the edited kerning values available in all applications, not just QuarkXPress.
• Smart Art™: Fonts with a Number in the Font Menu Name
When you re-image Bitstream fonts with a number in the font menu name, for example, Swiss721 Cn BT (Swiss 721 Condensed), you get a printer resident font instead of the Bitstream font. This occurs because Smart Art doesn’t read the corresponding printer font name correctly. If this happens, try downloading the printer font with LaserWriter Font Utility (on the Utilities disk). Then re-image the font in Smart Art.
APPLICATION NOTES FOR TRUETYPE
• Applications Incompatible with TrueType
Earlier versions of some applications are not compatible with TrueType fonts in System 6.0.7 or System 7. Some of these applications are

If you are not sure whether your application version works with TrueType fonts, call the application manufacturer for information about versions with TrueType support.
• Large Point Sizes/Enlarged or Reduced Views
In some applications, you may notice that TrueType fonts above 120 point do not appear correctly on the screen. If you choose an enlarged or reduced view, TrueType fonts may also not appear correctly on the screen. These problems occur because the application version you are using does not take full advantage of TrueType’s capabilities. Call the application manufacturer for information about an update with improved TrueType support.
• Aldus PageMaker
PageMaker 4.01 and earlier: When you use the Aldus printer driver to print a document with TrueType fonts in System 6.0.7 or System 7, Courier prints instead of the TrueType fonts. Try using the Apple printer driver instead. To use the Apple driver, hold down the Option key as you choose “Print...” from the File menu.
• Microsoft® Word
Microsoft Word 4.0 is not compatible with TrueType fonts. Call Microsoft to order version 4.0d, which is compatible with TrueType.
System 6.0.7 users: To use TrueType fonts in Microsoft Word 4.0d in System 6.0.7, you also need the “MS Word Printer Init.” Call Microsoft to order the MS Word Printer Init.
